Theocracy is a project by a guy named Matt Smith from Athens, Georgia also the home of Bill Mallonnee of Vigilantes of Love, R.E.M., and the B-52’s. Athens is known for college rock, and folk rock rather than for metal.
Theocracy is my favorite power metal album that was released last year. For an independent release, the listener will be pleasantly surprised how well produced it is. In addition Matt Smith plays all of the instruments on the album as well (guitars, bass, drums, keyboards, and all vocals). If this project was an audition cd or resume, he could land any position within any metal band hailing from both Europe and America.
Musically, the style of the power metal that he plays can be described as epic power metal. Epic power metal has usually big catchy choruses, symphonic orchestration in the background, blitzkrieg drums, and crunchy guitars. Bands that use this style are Helloween, Blind Guardian, Edguy, Avantasia, and Stratovarius. in the credits, Matt Smith thanks Tobias Sammett of Edguy and Thomas Youngblood of Kamelot as influences. I would say that his project comes closer to sounding like Edguy than Kamelot. This album could also be the “unofficial soundtrack” to epic medieval movies like excalibur, the Lord of the Rings Trilogy, and Braveheart.
Vocally, Matt Smith uses the operatic style that is prevelant in this genre. if you mix Michael Sweet of Stryper with Geoff Tate of Queensryche, you have Matt’s voice.
